How to Crush your Fall Marathon (Part 1)

Are you training for a fall marathon this year? Chasing a beast like the marathon in the crisp cool autumn weather feels incredible after a summer of hot humid running!

We want to share some fall marathon tips and tricks with you all as you work towards your marathon goal. Many of these tips also generally apply to any type of run training, so even if you’re not necessarily training for the 26.2 distance this fall, these can still apply to you!

Since we have a surplus of information we would love to share with you, we’re making this a series, so consider this part one in your AWAKEN fall marathon training journey!

Tip #1: Build a Strong Foundation

This really applies to anything in life, but especially training for a marathon. If you neglect to build a strong foundation that includes several consistent easy mileage weeks, the rest of the training block will be a much bigger struggle than it should be. Hopefully at this point, you’ve accumulated a solid summer of base training!

Tip #2: Consistency is Key

This is a major theme that marathon legend Meb Keflezighi highlights in his book, “26 Marathons.” Meb directly quotes that “consistency is key.” This mantra helped him breakthrough in his professional running career.

If you ask any professional marathoner in general, they will probably tell you that the biggest impact on their marathon performance is simply consistency. The ability to train consistently is the number one performance enhancer.

In order to train consistently, you need to be healthy!!! And even if you’re not necessarily training for a marathon, consistently being able to train is fundamental in improving your performance.

So if you constantly have injuries or pain popping up that prevent you from training consistently, please don't hesitate to reach out-- we can get to the ROOT CAUSE of the pain you're experiencing! This could even be an imbalance in your running form that's causing constant or recurring injuries to pop up! Something like that won't get fixed by simply treating the area of pain-- you need to fix the weakness or imbalance that's causing this pain!

Tip #3: Practice Patience and Trust the Process

When training for anything, especially the marathon, trusting the process is essential. After all, if you’re not enjoying the process of training, how or why will you even enjoy the race?

Of course not every day you’ll feel amazing or motivated to run– even professional runners don’t feel motivated 100% of the time. However, if you continue to show up and trust the process, the fitness will come! As pro marathoner, Olympian and 2018 Boston Marathon champion Des Linden says: "Keep showing up!"

Tip #4: Remember the Rule of Thirds

Have you ever heard of the “Rule of Thirds” for runners? If you follow former pro runner and Olympian Alexi Pappas, she’s shared this rule in interviews and in her book, “Bravey: Chasing Dreams, Befriending Pain, and Other Big Ideas.” Pappas learned about the “Rule of Thirds” from her Olympic coach. Pappas explains, “when you’re chasing a dream or doing anything hard, you’re meant to feel good a third of the time, OK a third of the time, and crappy a third of the time. And if the ratio is roughly in that range, then you’re doing fine.”
